AM I MISSING SOMETHING OR DID THE ARMY ELITE NOT THINK OR WANT THIS PROTECTION , SURE THEY WON ANYWAY , BUT AT WHAT COST TO THE SOLDIERS ?

I question the same thing. Maybe it was too costly to provide the soldiers with bulletproof shields and other defensive equipment to increase their safety. Kind of says alot about the expendence of humanity.
I thought about it and I betya if the Brass and the politicians were first out of the boats huge bulldozers fitted with bulletproof shields would have been there for them to hide behind. If not bulletproof really really, really, really,thick steel. Ya think?
It was done in the same manner as trench warfare from WWI "OK men climb out of the trench and run as fast as you can into the German machine gun fire."
